Why doesn't it work???????
Why doesn't it work???????

One of the most common complaints we hear is:

“MRP in Business Central doesn’t work.”

In almost every case, the system is working — it’s just following rules that haven’t been fully defined.

MRP in Dynamics 365 Business Central is not an intelligent planner. It is a deterministic calculation engine. It does exactly what your item data, planning parameters, and setup tell it to do.

Common Symptoms

  • Constant emergency action messages

  • Planned orders that make no practical sense

  • Excess stock alongside shortages

The Root Cause

MRP has been treated as a button, not a process.

Running the Planning Worksheet without validated item planning data guarantees poor results — even though the system is behaving correctly.

How to Avoid This

  • Validate planning setup before trusting MRP output

  • Start with a small item set and expand gradually

  • Treat MRP as an operational discipline, not a feature toggle
